Whether you are a second year law student, a practicing attorney, a legal assistant or a support professional, choosing the right law firm takes focus.
Excellence At Shearman & Sterling, you will find yourself working in Hong Kong or London, helping to close a cross-border merger or collaborating on an international restructuring. We believe there are few places where an attorney can gain such multi-jurisdictional experience. Our rigorous recruiting process ensures that we attract highly accomplished and unique people to the firm. Our core values of excellence, integrity, client focus, teamwork, energy, and diversity are present in everything we do.
Experience Shearman & Sterling is one of the world’s leading international law firms and has been at the forefront of the legal profession since our inception in 1873. The firm’s early clients included many of the railroads, industrial companies, and financial institutions who helped shape global business. Today, with more than 1,000 lawyers worldwide, we advise our clients—leading corporations, financial institutions, governments, state-owned enterprises, and technology and biotech companies—on the legal matters they face around the globe.
Expertise This global practice is built on a tradition of exceptional legal expertise in a diverse and dynamic environment. We owe the success of our practice to the skills, versatility, and commitment of our people. We hire outstanding individuals and offer them a demanding and supportive professional environment within which they can become leaders in their practice areas. Continuing education programs help Shearman & Sterling’s attorneys and legal assistants further develop and refine their skills. We have an extensive international practice representing a broad-based clientele. And we have offices in the world’s key commercial centers. Because we place a strong emphasis on professional growth, our partners and senior associates will provide ongoing career support, advice, and guidance to new attorneys.
Diversity Shearman & Sterling values the different perspectives that the diversity of our lawyers, legal assistants, and support professionals brings to the firm. We are committed to fostering and maintaining an inclusive and respectful work environment in which all people are welcome. Our Diversity Committee and Diversity Management Attorney work to promote these goals. The firm is proud to rank #1 in the 2005 Top 100 Law Firms for Diversity survey conducted by Multicultural Law, and among the top ten in Minority Law Journal’s Diversity Scorecard.
Community We strongly encourage associates and legal assistants to devote time to the wide range of pro bono matters available at the firm. We are especially proud of our unique partnership with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Partners and associates have contributed to this partnership by training prosecutors, and together with some of the Firm's legal assistants have conducted research into a range of jurisdictional practices. In fact, Shearman & Sterling stands at the forefront of international pro bono law. We have been recognized for winning groundbreaking asylum cases on behalf of clients from Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. In 2004, the firm finalized awards from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of over $35 million for widows, widowers, parents, and children of 21 victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center. The victims came from Ecuador, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Poland, Ghana, and the United States.
Flexibility Where you see yourself now and in the future is important to us. We offer practice group rotations, an office transfer policy and alternative career path programs to meet your needs. Practice group and office assignment requests will be considered, subject to the firm’s business needs.
