Long before opening our Rome office in 2002, Shearman & Sterling had been a leading international firm in the Italian market.  During the 1990s, we worked on many of Italy's privatizations and initial public offerings, with our lawyers regularly making their way to Italy from London, Paris and beyond.  As increasing numbers of international deals started to be run directly from Italy, it became clear that our clients were looking to us to provide local advice from a permanent base in the country.

Our Rome office has grown steadily since its opening.  The office focuses mainly on mergers and acquisitions, general corporate and capital markets work, but it also handles bank finance, acquisition finance, restructuring, leasing, and real estate transactions.  Recent examples have included a cross-border merger between a German company and an Italian company, both publicly listed; the acquisition by a US client of an Italian company from a French seller; an acquisition in France and joint venture work in the US and Hong Kong for an Italian listed client; and the restructuring of bonds sold to Italian investors for an Argentine client.  Our Rome-based team works closely with Shearman & Sterling lawyers in the rest of Europe, the Americas and Asia. 

In addition to US and Italian lawyers, the Rome office also includes lawyers qualified in English and French law.  All resident lawyers are fluent in Italian, and all of our Italian-trained associates hold graduate degrees from law schools in the United States or the United Kingdom.  The Rome office provides clients with local capability combined with the quality, broad experience and talent that clients expect from the global law firm of Shearman & Sterling.
